“You can’t build a reputation on what you are going to do” – Fortune Cookie, June 2011.
This is the most profound and meaningful statement I have ever come across in a fortune cookie.
In this world, one of the few things that stays with you forever is your reputation. How you are known to the people around you makes all the difference in the world. Opportunities present themselves because of your reputation. You can be known by your name before anyone ever knows who you are as a person.
A reputation sticks with you. It exists before you arrive, and it stays around long after you are gone.
Once you establish a reputation, it is difficult to change. You can only build upon what you have started.
Reputations are built on your actions. They are built on the decisions you make and how you follow-through. Your words will not build a reputation. Your actions will. What you do today will build your reputation, whether good or bad.
I still have that fortune that I read last summer. It sits on my bed-side table and I read it almost every day.
